VIDEO & IN-PERSON
INTERVIEW TIPS FOR
Some jobs will require a video call to make first contact, here are some tips to help.
Use Earphones
Earphones will help maximise sound and minimise interferences and background distractions.
Background
Ensure a good backdrop, clutter and mess free.
Lighting
Correct lighting is so important, the whole purpose is to be seen after all.
Quiet Place
Avoid external noise / distractions. Set up in a nice quiet place.
Trial Run
Do a trial run with friends or family to check that everything works (both visual and audio)
Fully Charged
Make sure the device you are using is fully charged and the camera / screen is clean.
Dressed Appropriately
First impressions go a long way, you will also feel more prepared if you have made an effort.
Drink Nearby
Have a glass of water close by just in case you get a dry throat.
Correct Angle
Spend time making sure the angle is correct, once achieved leave the camera alone.
Pen and Paper
If you have any questions make sure you have them written down so you remember to ask.
Relax, Enjoy & remember to breathe!
Finally, relax, enjoy yourself, breathe and most importantly be yourself.
INTERVIEW TIPS FOR
Many employers will want an in-person interview or meeting before offering a job, here are some tips to help.
Before the interview
Make sure you have the right date and time in your diary and double check it beforehand.
The same goes for the arranged meeting point, make sure you know exactly where you are going and check for any road / transport closures before you set off.
Preparation
It sounds silly but make sure you are well presented, in appropriate attire for the role including shoes (making sure you are not over or under dressed).
Ensure you are well hydrated and have had enough food before you leave.
Check the forecast, as you may need to remember a coat or umbrella if it’s looking rather wet or opt for lighter clothing if it is particularly hot.
Make sure you look neat and tidy before you set off (hair brushed and teeth cleaned)!
Remember to take a note pad and pen and any documents that the employer has requested. Its best to keep these in an organised folder which you can easily access.
Leave in good time to make sure that you are not late.
On arrival
Try and arrive a few minutes early but do not over do it and arrive too early as that can really throw employers off, especially if they have other meetings scheduled.
Introduce yourself positively and professionally and then take a deep breath and relax.
If offered a drink, we often recommend opting for a soft drink or non-caffeinated hot option. Obviously its your choice but remember with coffee / caffeine it can taint your breath and in some cases make you slightly hyper!
If time allows, visit the rest room for one final freshen up and toilet stop to minimise any distractions in the interview to follow.
During the interview
Listen to the questions being asked, if you haven’t understood something then its ok to raise this and ask for it to be repeated, you are human after all.
Have a class of water to hand in case you get a dry throat.
Try and keep calm, be yourself throughout and remember to breathe.
If you have any specific questions relating to the role, make sure you address them, this is where your notepad and pen will come in handy.
To end the interview
Thank the employer for their time and if appropriate to do so, ask what the next steps will be.
