The Assistant Head Gardener will provide essential support in the maintenance and care of the wonderful gardens, landscapes and grounds. Assisting with a variety of tasks, ensuring that the environment is aesthetically pleasing and well - maintained. The estate is set in a stunning location within easy access of both Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds, close to the small town of Clare, Suffolk.

Key Responsibilites: 

Planting & Care:

  • Assisting with planting flowers, shrubs, trees, and vegetables
  • Watering plants, pruning, deadheading, and applying fertilizers
  • Maintaining proper plant health, including monitoring for pests and diseases
  • Caring for plants within the greenhouse

Weeding & Ground Maintenance:

  • Weeding flowerbeds, vegetable patches, and lawns
  • Clearing leaves and debris from garden areas
  • Maintaining pathways and borders ensuring they are tidy and free from overgrowth

Lawn care:

  • Assisting with mowing lawns and maintaining neat edges

Tool & Equipment Maintenance:

  • Competence in operating large garden machinery - lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, strimmers and leaf blowers
  • Ensuring all tools are properly cleaned , maintained, and stored

Soil Management:

  • Helping with basic soil preparation and digging

Landscaping Projects:

  • Supporting the team with larger landscaping projects such as planting new beds, installing garden features, or other tasks as directed by the Head Gardener

Health & Safety Compliance:

  • Following Health & Safety guidelines for the safe use of equipment, chemicals and tools
  • Reporting any hazards or issues relating to garden maintenance

Customer/Visitor Interaction:

  • Occasionally assisting with garden tours or informing visitors about the plants and landscaping

What you will need:

  • A strong work ethic and reliability
  • Experience, with the ability to take direction, and willingness to learn
  • RHS level 1 or 2 qualification in horticulture / landscaping or the equivalent
  • PA1 and PA6  spray certificates
  • Chainsaw certificate (desired but not essential)
  • To be personable and a team player, who communicates well with others.
  • Basic knowledge of gardening tools and equipment
  • Physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors for extended periods, which could include lifting, kneeling etc

The salary will depend on experience.
