We are seeking an experienced, dedicated, and proactive Estate Groundsman to join a beautiful and expanding private estate in Somerset. Reporting directly to the Estate Manager, this is a varied, hands-on role for an individual who takes pride in maintaining exceptional standards across extensive grounds, gardens, paddocks, and estate infrastructure.

This position offers the opportunity to become a valued member of a professional and supportive estate team, working within a private family environment where discretion, reliability, and attention to detail are highly valued.

Accommodation could be available for the right candidate if required.

The Role

As Estate Groundsman, you will be responsible for the ongoing care, maintenance, and presentation of the estate grounds, alongside a broad range of estate maintenance and support duties. No two days are the same, making this an ideal role for someone who enjoys variety and takes ownership of their work.

Key Responsibilities

Grounds & Horticultural Maintenance

  • Maintain formal lawns, paddocks, landscaped gardens, and wider estate grounds to an exceptional standard.
  • Carry out lawn care including mowing, edging, feeding, aeration, scarification, and seasonal treatments.
  • Hedge cutting, pruning, shrub maintenance, and vegetation management.
  • Operate grounds maintenance equipment including strimmers, brushcutters, hedge cutters, and mowers.
  • Undertake weed control and management of invasive species.
  • Clear leaves, debris, and fallen branches from driveways, pathways, gutters, and communal areas.
  • Monitor plant health and identify issues requiring specialist attention.

Estate Maintenance

  • Repair and maintain fencing, gates, dry stone walls, and estate infrastructure.
  • Complete general estate repairs and practical DIY tasks.
  • Carry out minor external plumbing and drainage maintenance.
  • Support the upkeep and presentation of outbuildings and ancillary estate buildings.

Machinery & Equipment

  • Safely operate ride-on mowers, compact tractors, trailers, and associated equipment.
  • Undertake routine servicing, cleaning, and maintenance of machinery.
  • Maintain machinery service records and report faults promptly.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are securely stored and maintained.

Animal Care

  • Feed, maintain, and care for a small collection of farm animals including chickens, pigs, ducks, geese, and goats.
  • Monitor animal welfare and maintain feed stocks.
  • Arrange feed ordering when required.

Estate Support

  • Assist with seasonal projects and wider estate improvements.
  • Support the Estate Manager with planned and reactive maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain a professional, trustworthy, and discreet approach within a private family environment.

About You

You will be a practical and self-motivated individual with previous experience working on a private estate, country house estate, or similar high-end rural property.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years' experience within a private estate, country estate, or similar environment.
  • Strong grounds maintenance and horticultural experience.
  • Competent in operating and maintaining grounds maintenance machinery.
  • Practical DIY and maintenance skills.
  • Good understanding of health and safety procedures.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
  • Reliable, trustworthy, and professional.

Desirable

  • Chainsaw qualifications (NPTC/LANTRA).
  • Horticultural qualifications.
  • Tractor operating experience.
  • Telehandler or machinery certifications.

Package & Benefits

  • Competitive salary of £32,000 – £42,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Discretionary annual performance bonus.
  • Live-in accommodation available if required.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Statutory holiday entitlement.
  • Opportunity to work within a prestigious and well-maintained private Somerset estate.
  • Long-term role within a supportive and professional team environment.

Working Hours

Minimum 40 hours per week, with a preference for 45–50 hours per week. Flexibility is required to meet seasonal demands and estate priorities.

If you are an experienced estate professional who takes pride in delivering exceptional standards and is looking for a rewarding long-term opportunity within a beautiful rural setting, we would be delighted to hear from you.
